About

gapingwhole is your weekly dose of critical thinking.

We are a philosophically minded blog collective. We cover everything: science, sports, politics, religion, movies, books, other pop culture oddities, dead white guys, you name it, we have a (probably ill-informed) opinion about it. The views expressed by one author may not reflect  the views of other gapingwhole authors (and generally do not, because we’re squabblers).

Feel free to join the fray, but don’t expect anyone to be particularly nice. If you want to suggest a topic, contribute a guest post, or just rant in our general direction, send an email to gapingwhole [at] hotmail [dot] com.

westwood (co-founder and blog manager) is an evenings-and-weekends philosopher with a preference for gymnosperms and cynical existentialism. Like much of the rest of humanity, westwood rants, raves, and imposes beliefs despite being fairly ignorant of just about everything. That is, everything except trees. westwood enjoys doing fieldwork-based environmental ethics projects, and other such contradictions.

Fluidfyre is a geographer Jedi with a penchant for obsessing over artistic projects, making a debate out of simple conversations, and losing sleep while perusing the Internet to amass a mental database of useless information. When she’s clawed her way out of that abyss, she usually finds herself in the dirt – and figured she might as well study it while she was down there.

Em. (co-founder) has a swinging brick for a heart and for reasons unknown, has decided to put her energies into the only academically sanctioned form of masochism, i.e. philosophy. She was a grad student with an interest in legal philosophy, she does not like romantic candle-lit dinners  or long walks on the beach and she will judge you. Sadly, she retired, as she has reached the ripe old age where she is in pursuit of a white wig.

Dr. J is a fitness and health blogger whom we adore for his blunt propensity to tell it like it is. He told us about his tussles with philosophy and changing natural selection.

emcee is your average university student with a penchant for sarcasm, shenanigans, and senseless seismologists (and abhorrently atrocious alliteration).  If she ever grows up she would like to be a genius, but in the meantime focuses on just keeping the party alive.

Kitch is an avid outdoorsperson with a love for travelling, and a tendency to laugh at inappropriate things, and gave us some great perspective on an unstable situation.

Mojofooka is a self-proclaimed twinkie (yellow on the outside, white on the inside), ridiculous gamer, aspiring artist, and wannabe rider of a flying leaf with a near incomprehensible sense of humour who somewhat regrets her skill in procrastination and thoroughly enjoys writing in overly long and complex sentences with little heed to her abuse of parentheses (and parentheses in parentheses (at times)).

Gabsattack! is super awesome, wrote about ingroups and outgroups, and just might be a dinosaur.

  2. Damn, i’d love to be a weekday philosopher again, but who can afford the rates?

  3. wow, i feel as if i will be judged if i post a comment. i wonder what will happen now?

  4. Trees AND philosophy? Either you’re kidding and I don’t get the joke or let’s have coffee sometime and talk about buds and roots. Even the environmental scientists around here are all about fauna–and the philosophers? Forget it.

  5. This site is way over my head. God, I wish I had paid better attention in Basic Texts. Now, by saying “God,” have I tipped my hand? What will happen next?

  6. I may be late to the party, Westwood, as I’ve only been reading your intriguing blog for a short while, but I wondered if you are familiar with the concept of weltschmerz?

I first heard the word a few years ago in the finals of the National Spelling Bee when the Canadian girl (my favorite) missed it and ended up finishing in second place.

    • I had not heard of it, but I am extremely intrigued. Sufficiently intrigued as to blog about it in future. Thank you!

  7. LOL–I am so GLAD you visited my blogcasa and left tracks to yours via your comment! Greetings!
